“…invaluable!”

“My daughter truly looks forward to her Thursday evening tutoring sessions with Rachael! Over the past few months, Rachael has gotten to know what engages her most and turns topics into a game or challenge, which is my daughter’s love language.

She’s extremely patient and organized and gives me a quick update on her progress each session. I’ve even done quick phone calls with Rachael before my daughter’s tests or meetings with the school to make sure we’re all on the same page. She’s helped coach me on what to ask for which is invaluable!”

“My daughter is really enjoying the one-on-one tutoring Rachael provides (she looks forward to it every week!) and it’s already making a difference after just a month or so. I’m thankful to have found someone who is just as invested as we are in helping our daughter succeed.”

“So many others have tried and failed…”

“We hired Rachael to tutor my 10 y/o daughter, S, who has been struggling in school. So many others have tried and failed (including IEP teachers) to get through to S, however Rachael’s calm but fun demeanor met my daughter right where she needed to be. Rachael was able to quickly identify S’s weakness and how to help her through them. After only 4 weeks or so of tutoring , S got an A- on a math test. We couldn’t be happier with the extra support Rachael has brought to S’s school experience.”

My Story

It all started when I was a third grader and started teaching my younger cousin at family gatherings. I wanted to be just like my amazing teacher. In high school, I worked at an after-school program and helped kids with their homework. I was also a teacher’s assistant for a math class for students with special needs. The teacher of the class told me I was the best teacher in the school. I always knew I wanted to work with kids and feel so fortunate that I get to call this my job!

After a few student teaching experiences, I received a bachelor’s degree in Educational Studies and Psychology from Emory University. Then I went to NYU where I earned a master’s degree in Early Childhood and Special Education. I moved back to the DC area and taught in public schools for 8 years. Throughout my education and teaching journey, I had many tutoring jobs.

After all that time preparing for this one career, I hated having to teach exactly what a teacher’s manual told me to say. I felt like I was failing my students because there were 22 of them with such a wide range of abilities and learning styles. I was told I had to keep teaching whatever was next in the curriculum no matter how many kids did not understand the last concept, even if it was crucial to understanding the next. When I had my second child in 2018, I decided to take some time off to raise my two children.

In 2022, I decided to start my own tutoring business. I love what I do so much! I love working one-on-one with students so I can connect with them, learn their learning styles and needs, meet them where they are, and focus on the areas they are struggling with. If they don’t understand something, I try to find a different way to teach or explain it. I incorporate fun activities and take breaks as needed. I love working with students outside or wherever they learn best. Everyone is different. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses and that’s what makes us all special in our own way! I do my best to make sure my students know they are amazing.

Through practice, I develop their growth mindset. I remind them whenever I can of all the awesome things they have done because they kept trying. Over time we build up stamina, determination, and resilience. Some days we just need more breaks and that’s ok too. I’m very flexible in my approach. I’m open to feedback from students and parents. I can’t wait to learn about your child and build that amazing connection that helps them learn. I look forward to hearing from you!
